Ad-driven social media platforms are willing to tolerate monumental volumes of abusive users. They’ve discovered the same thing the Mainstream Media did: negative emotions grip people’s attention harder than positive ones. Hate and fear drives engagement, and engagement drives ad impressions. #Mastodon is not an ad-driven platform. In other news: currently obsessed with the Green Day demo song ‘Black Eyeliner’ from the 25th anniversary (jfc the time has past) release of Nimrod. Some songs just catch me from the first listen and hit me deep. Maybe some of it is the familiarity since part of the chorus ended up in ‘Church on Sunday.’ But usually the combo of the music & melodies hit me, and the lyrics do on a subconscious level until I learn the actual lyrics. I remember the day #KurtCobain died so clearly. It was April 5, 1994; I was a senior at #NorthwesternUniversity. I had no classes that day. I woke up, showered, and put on combat boots, brown linen pants, black t shirt & my #SocialDistortion Skelly hat. (Why I recall my outfit I have no idea.) I heard on the radio that they ‘found a body’ in Cobain’s house & didn’t think much of it. I figured somebody had OD’d and maybe it was him – but prolly not because he should be happy with his phenomenal success, no? I walked over to a friends’ apartment. We were hanging out & drinking MGD when the real news came out. We were stunned. I have no recollection what the rest of the day was like, what we talked about or anything. Just spent the last few days switching from #LastPass to #ProtonPass for passwords and #MFA. LastPass’ security f ups are well documented and I don’t trust them. I would’ve switched to Proton Pass sooner had I realized that my paying for #Protonmail included upgraded #password management. The clincher for me: Proton Pass includes #2FA! No more using a separate app, Proton Pass will copy & paste MFA codes too!
