I’ve gotten deeply into #UrbanPlanning in the last few years, abetted by a lifelong dream of living in #Europe. I discovered #Youtube channels like @nerd4cities@mstdn.social, @notjustbikes@notjustbikes.com, & #CityBeautiful that spelled out what makes places livable & why European #cities tend to be better. It’s changed my mind on where I’d like to live, from ‘I want acres in the country’ to wanting denser populations & walkability – & where city finances aren’t held hostage by parking lots & roads. This #video highlights some good & bad things about #Valencia, Spain (aka my hopeful retirement locale), but what shocked me was the 80% home ownership figure, vs 65% in the US. Americans like me tend to associate #apartments (aka #flats) with renting, but not in Europe. There’s a better way of living, and I’d like to experience it. #CityNerd #NotJustBikes
My final #Eurovision rankings, in order: My top 3 The best of the rest OK songs elevated by the performers Mediocre songs elevated by the performers Songs save by at least one kickass synth sound (ie they suck otherwise) Forgettable songs that sound like ripoffs of other songs (like Loreen’s ‘winner’) & performances that fell flat Songs that were just plain BAD And finally: the two worst entries of Eurovision 2024
Just shared this with my kids. It is good to know how long political things take when it seems like nothing is happening. It took Biden & his team 6 months to get through Mike Johnson’s skull. Politics & diplomacy are delicate processes and things are rarely as simple as we wish. This was simple vs how complex & multifaceted the situation with Israel, Iran, et al is. This is also why experience matters. This #quote from #JosephCampbell came up on my #birthday years ago but this year it hits differently. It put into words what I felt but couldn’t articulate. After recently reading how #ADHD brains mature at a much different rate than neurotypical brains, it’s a little 🤯🤯🤯. Maybe #mythology hearkened to me on a much deeper level than I ever expected. My understanding of how different I am from ‘the norm’ has only happened in the past 2 years. Yet I always celebrated being different, and decided long ago that striving to be like everyone else was a Bad Thing. It still took years for me to listen to myself (it was a gradual process), but that’s fine. Little shifts in perspective add up over time until one day you find that you’ve done a 180 and are swimming against the flow. To all my fellow #ADHDers & #neurodiverse peeps out ...
