Myths formulate things for you. They say, for example, that you have to become an adult at a particular age. The age might be a good average for that to happen––but actually, in the individual life, it differs greatly. Some people are late bloomers and come to particular stages at a relatively late age. You have to have a feeling for where you are. You've got only one life to live, and you don't have to live it for six people. Pay attention to it. (Joseph Campbell)

This #quote from #JosephCampbell came up on my #birthday years ago but this year it hits differently. It put into words what I felt but couldn’t articulate. After recently reading how #ADHD brains mature at a much different rate than neurotypical brains, it’s a little 🤯🤯🤯.

Maybe #mythology hearkened to me on a much deeper level than I ever expected. My understanding of how different I am from ‘the norm’ has only happened in the past 2 years. Yet I always celebrated being different, and decided long ago that striving to be like everyone else was a Bad Thing.

It still took years for me to listen to myself (it was a gradual process), but that’s fine. Little shifts in perspective add up over time until one day you find that you’ve done a 180 and are swimming against the flow.

To all my fellow #ADHDers & #neurodiverse peeps out there:

Take your time. Be true to yourself. You’ve got this.

Arp Laszlo
Hi, I’m Arp! I got diagnosed with ADHD at 49, and now I'm trying to figure out what's me, what's masking, and just about everything else. I make comics (when imposter syndrome isn't striking) and write about life as a creative Indian-American. I’m self-taught, self-employed, and self-flagellating.

you have to love it enough to be bad at it. brian mcdonald
This isn’t #adhd specific but it is a quote that really smacked me upside the head. It made me realize that I didn’t mind sucking at a lot of activities I’ve enjoyed. I welcomed the process of getting better – or not getting better, because sometimes things are just plain fun. And if sucking at it isn’t appealing, then I guess it’s not for me. This has proven pretty damn accurate. The source – #BrianMcDonald – is many things (writer, director, producer) all built around his skill in #storytelling. He’s written some excellent #books on #writing as well – #InvisibleInk is one I highly recommend. My favorite place to glean some #wisdom from him is his #podcast ‘You Are A Storyteller’ (where I heard this #quote). He talks a lot about movies but his explanations for why this or that #story works/doesnt work has helped me write better #stories. #meme ...

Today might have been the most productive day I’ve had in a loooooong time. And not one of those *I’m hyperfocused so I work for 12h* days either. I knocked off a bunch of todos, worked 2h+ on one of my 2 big long term projects, upgraded a computer (that didn’t work, troubleshooting will be next weekend), and now it’s time to for some self care (bathing & grooming). #Vyvanse might be magic, or it might have been my new therapist last week. #adhd #AuADHD #AdultADHD

TIL that #Obsidian has a code inspector just like browsers, so I was able to fix the appearance of some #Todoist #tasks and make it look *exactly* as I wanted to, which filled me with much #joy. Obsidian is truly personalizable – maybe I need to learn how to make plug-ins to extend functionality (#coding has always been so abstract to me that I’ve never been able to follow through, I can do front end dev only because I like seeing changes visually). If you’re feeling limited by simple #notes apps like Apple Notes, I highly #recommend #ObsidianApp. It can be as simple or as complex as you like, and you can access your vault on phone, tablet, and desktop easily. #PKM #PersonalKnowledgeManagement #Recommendations

I can’t count the number of times someone asked me to stop pacing because ‘it made them nervous.’ Has that happened to you?

Here’s what I did in #Obsidian to make the #Todoist #tasks display better: I indented subtasks and made the meta smaller, inline, and with reduced opacity that increases on hover. Purty and useful 🙂 #ObsidianApp #PKM #TaskManagement

It is AMAZING what catching up on #sleep can do for #MentalHealth. 3 days ago I was struggling, this morning I woke up refreshed and ready to jump back on all the horses I’ve ignored for 2w. #Sleep is the first domino of #selfcare that #ADHD-ers need to take care of. Gathering data and using technology has helped me to get back on track. When I looked at my sleep data for the month (see image), I saw how spotty sleep affected how I felt. The 2nd week was so bad that motivation cratered; I had to use last week to get my sleep back on track. I use two #iOS #apps for this: #AutoSleep (the screenshot source) and #RiseApp (it calculates #CircadianRhythms, the best times to sleep & wake, and tracks sleep debt). 3 nights of 8.5h of sleep caught me up, and I did it by going to ...
