The brain’s frontal lobes, which are involved in ADHD, continue to mature until we reach age 35. In practical terms, this means that people with ADHD can expect some lessening of their symptoms over time. Many will not match the emotional maturity of a 21-year-old until their late 30’s. So while most people graduating from college take time to adjust to adult life, people with ADHD need more time, more family support, and more professional help.

Have you read this? It made me wonder how I managed to adult in the minimal capacity I could in my 20s & on – which consisted, tbh, in drinking too much #alcohol (a source of #dopamine & lowered #anxiety).

But I’m thinking more on how to best guide & support my kids (though without some of the punitive ideas like charging rent, the author is a dinosaur from the 60s).

One benefit of #thrifting is finding stuff I like that I would never have buying new since I don’t shop for clothes anymore. We found a pair of #LuckyBrand #pants in my size and I now have a favorite brand of pants. They’re straight leg, soft (kinda like brushed twill), stretchy (but don’t look like stretchy plastic), and so light and comfortable that it barely felt that I had pants on. Their only flaw is a lack of a dedicated celphone pocket, but I still want a few pairs for regular use. And since we were in the mall yesterday as our 18yo looked for places to apply for jobs, I noticed that straight leg & boot cut pants are back, and many have celphone pockets. I need to stock up on those for the next 25y before they go out of style again.

I remember the day #KurtCobain died so clearly. It was April 5, 1994; I was a senior at #NorthwesternUniversity. I had no classes that day. I woke up, showered, and put on combat boots, brown linen pants, black t shirt & my #SocialDistortion Skelly hat. (Why I recall my outfit I have no idea.) I heard on the radio that they ‘found a body’ in Cobain’s house & didn’t think much of it. I figured somebody had OD’d and maybe it was him – but prolly not because he should be happy with his phenomenal success, no? I walked over to a friends’ apartment. We were hanging out & drinking MGD when the real news came out. We were stunned. I have no recollection what the rest of the day was like, what we talked about or anything. I had a major breakthrough yesterday, #singing at full volume in front of someone else. Usually I sing alone in the car, pretty damn loudly according to my watch‘s decibel warnings. I’ve long wanted to sing in bands & stuff and I recently realized that #anxiety strangled my voice when I tried – and even affected my normal speaking voice, making it much higher pitched than it should be. So singing at full volume in the car with our 19yo is a big deal 💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽. #adhd #music #smallwins

I’ve gotten deeply into #UrbanPlanning in the last few years, abetted by a lifelong dream of living in #Europe. I discovered #Youtube channels like @nerd4cities@mstdn.social, @notjustbikes@notjustbikes.com, & #CityBeautiful that spelled out what makes places livable & why European #cities tend to be better. It’s changed my mind on where I’d like to live, from ‘I want acres in the country’ to wanting denser populations & walkability – & where city finances aren’t held hostage by parking lots & roads. This #video highlights some good & bad things about #Valencia, Spain (aka my hopeful retirement locale), but what shocked me was the 80% home ownership figure, vs 65% in the US. Americans like me tend to associate #apartments (aka #flats) with renting, but not in Europe. There’s a better way of living, and I’d like to experience it. #CityNerd #NotJustBikes

  1. @arpcomics “I’d go out and buy an expensive car and make the first payment, but that was it. My Dad would always have to pay the rest.” That tells me all I need to know about Betsy (and it has nothing to do with her having ADHD).

  2. @NorthByNorthWeston Good point. That was a bit much and I agree it’s not adhd. ADHD would be paying the bills late and ending up with fees & fines.I’ve also never bought an expensive car because my adhd means I can’t just work at a job, play the social game, get promoted/find a better job, et al.
